Weiler-Leopold Nature Preserve

The next stop on our Wabash River Tour was another NICHES preserve: Weiler-Leopold Nature Preserve. Weiler-Leopold is 180 acres of prairie and black oak savanna. It shares a parking lot with Black Rock Barrens (different from Black Rock) Nature Preserve. Both preserves feature their own loop trails, and each is quite unique.

The wildflowers are coming, just not quite yet.

The wildflowers I’d encountered in a previous trip here were not at their peak. It appeared that one wave of flowers had just finished and another wave was not quite ready to burst. I imagine they’ll be stunning by the end of July.

The mowed paths were fun places to run.

Our family didn’t stay at Weiler-Leopold very long; the sun was beginning its evening descent, and the boy was getting very tired. I plan a return trip in a few weeks for the prairie flowers.

A sample of late July wildflowers. Taken 7/25/13.
