Nature in the Garden

So, the boy and I haven’t been in the woods much lately, but we have been caring for our garden. We’ve already had a nice crop of lettuce, radishes, and peas, and the tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are beginning to produce small green fruits.

The most exciting discovery for my son, however, has been the black swallowtails. We were fortunate enough to be present while a black swallowtail laid eggs on some volunteer dill. We’ve watched our tiny guests almost daily, and the little caterpillars are beginning to get some size. I hope that we’ll be able to place one in a cage to watch the continuing metamorphosis.
